Ella 100

Today – Tuesday 25 April – marks the centenary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald. From her success in the Apollo Theater, Harlem’s talent competition to Chick Webb to world-wide fame as one of the greatest interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Ella Fitzgerald is the subject of three programmes on BBC Radio. Ella Fitzgerald: a Glorious Noise is a half hour documentary to be broadcast on Radio 4 at 11:30am with contributions from Jesse Norman, Dianne Reeves and Norma Winstone.
Radio 2 weighs in with two programmes; Remembering Ella (8:00pm) presented by Leo Green. Talking heads include Cleo Laine, Patti Austin and Mica Paris. At 10:00pm Ella Fitzgerald – the First Lady of Song explores Ella’s life in jazz in the first of two hour-long programmes; Ella Fitzgerald – the First Lady of Song. Hats off to the Beeb.
