Produced by Andy Ross at Astar Studios and cover mounted on the December double-issue of Jazzwise Magazine, ‘The Yamaha New Jazz Sessions 2013’ CD and live launch provide a unique insight into the musicians who will take UK Jazz forward in the future. Former Yamaha Jazz Scholars include Kit Downes, Calum Gourlay, who along with drummer James Maddren received a prestigious Mercury Prize nomination for the debut Kit Downes Trio album ‘Golden’, produced by Andy Ross, plus Zem Audu, Josh Arcoleo, Matt Robinson and Dave Hamblett who have gone on to become highly regarded and in-demand musicians on the contemporary jazz scene.
THE YAMAHA NEW JAZZ SESSIONS 2013’ CD features seven outstanding young Jazz musicians nominated by the Heads of Jazz at seven of the UK’s leading conservatoires, PLUS special guest tracks from Kit DownesClare Teal - performing a track from the new Tim Rice and Stuart Brayson musical 'From Here to Eternity' with Grant Windsor, andSamara featuring Steve Rubie to mark the 606 Club's 25th anniversary.
Five of the seven featured Yamaha Jazz Scholars (as Alex Woods is studying in the USA and Sam Miles touring overseas) will each perform a live 20 minute set with their own bands at the 606 launch on Wednesday 4th December as follows:ElLIOT GALVIN (Piano), LLOYD HAINES (Drums), ANGUS MILNE (Double Bass), DAVID INGAMELLS - (Drums) andPETER JOHNSTONE (Piano). (Full details below)
The CD is the result of Yamaha's unique partnership with Jazzwise magazine, the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group, PPL and 606 Club, as part of a highly acclaimed scholarship programme now in its seventh year, offering financial support with performance and recording opportunities to a new generation of young jazz musicians.
The CD series is expected to reach 100,000 copies circulated since its debut release in 2008 and former guest artists have included Led Bib, Gareth Williams, Leanne Carroll, Nigel Hitchcock, Julian Joseph, Gwilym Simcock, Jason Rebello, Ryan Quigley, YolanDa Brown, Georgina Jackson, Emma Smith and Mica Paris.
Michael Connarty MP, Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group stated, “Yamaha added another dimension to the Parliamentary Jazz Groups' efforts to promote jazz, with their wonderful Yamaha Jazz Scholarships, developing our events from appreciation and enjoyment of jazz to encouraging jazz education. I hope this showcase CD of the young talents we enjoy at our 'live' Yamaha jazz scholarship concerts in Parliament will open peoples' ears to the high quality of jazz music being created in the UK.  Yamaha gets my Vote - of Thanks."
Yamaha Managing Director Mark Rolfe commented, “The Yamaha New Jazz Sessions’ cd and live launch at the 606 have added showcase and professional development opportunities to these innovative scholarships that have further extended our relationship with Jazzwise, PPL and the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group. We are committed to the promotion of Jazz Performance and these scholarships complement our many other music education and student support initiatives. What better way to support the studies and showcase the talent of the UK’s finest upcoming young Jazz musicians than through financial assistance, live performance and the recording opportunity that features them alongside major artists in the jazz world on the cover of the UK’s biggest selling jazz magazine.”
This annual event has become a hot ticket on the jazz calendar so early booking is strongly recommended.
Normal club entry rules will apply on the night with doors @ 7.30pm. Tickets and dinner reservations can be booked in advance directly through the 606 Club on 020 7352 5953. www.606club.co.uk
