Kathyrn Williams: “I got into Miles Davis when I was a teenager. But I’m nowhere near as knowledgeable as Anthony [Kerr]: he is an encyclopedia of jazz, with a real in-depth, academic knowledge. I’m just a fan.” – (Jazz Journal December 2017).

Christian McBride: "He [Horace Silver] was the whole package" – (Downbeat September 2014).

Johanna Graham Quartet CD Launch @ Pizza Express, Dean St., London Sunday May 25.

Earlier last month I gave a rave review to a début album from Cornwall based singer Johanna Graham -Review here.
Don't just take my word for it...
"We are delighted to introduce the Johanna Graham Quartet, Cornwall's best kept secret, to Dean Street for the launch of their début album 'Don't Let Me Be Lonely'. Expect creative and innovative interpretations of well known standards and stylish jazz renditions of some unexpected pop classics, alongside captivating, self penned new compositions." Pizza Express Jazz Club.
-----
"A fine singer with a palpably individual style" Jazzwise Magazine.
-----
"Beautiful vocals" Chrissie Hynde.

------
Personally I can think of few better experiences than listening to Johanna Graham, enjoying a pizza and accompanying it all with a glass or two of Pinot Grigot .
Unfortunately, I'm nearly 300 miles away at present so I can't enjoy the live experience but, if you're down that way, please make the effort - it will be worth it. And any critics, bloggers etc who do make it, send me a link to your review.
Lance.

Submissions for review

Whilst we appreciate the many emails, texts, messages and other communications we receive requesting album/gig reviews on BSH, regrettably, we are unable to reply to them all other than those we are able to answer with a positive response.
Similarly, CDs received by post will only be considered if accompanied by sufficient background material.
Finally, bear in mind that this is a jazz-based site when submitting your album.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
