Trombonist/writer Mike Zwerin died today - age 79. I never heard him play trombone but I read many of his articles in Down Beat and his book, Close Enough For Jazz, is close enough to be, in my humble opinion, one of the very best jazz related books.
Strangely enough, I'd picked up the book years ago but never got around to reading it until last Summer! A great read with lots of insight into the day to day life of a jazz musician away from home.
Lance.PS: Once again, thanks to LondonJazz.

Mike Zwerin was the original trombonist in Miles "Birth of the Cool" Band in its one & only booking at The Royal Roost. He plays in the "live" performances available on "The Complete Birth Of The Cool" album. He was replaced by J.J.Johnson and then by Kai Winding for the studio versions of the arrangements. I will have to listen carefully now to the "live" tracks to see if Mike takes a solo !
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave - he takes a somewhat blustery chorus on the first live version of 'Move'.
