The late great tenor player, Hank Mobley, received this piece of musical advice from his Uncle Dave: "If you're with someone who plays loud, you play soft. If someone plays fast then you play slow. If you try to do what they're doing; you're in trouble."
Sounds like it might not have been bad advice at that. It worked for Hank who was my favourite of all the Blue Note tenor players.

ReplyDeleteThere's an interesting book available about Mobley: the Music of Hank Mobley by Derek Ansell. Well worth a read.
I have quite a few Mobley albums but personally I think music doesn't get much better than Soul Station - perfection!

Yes that's a great CD. I think Hank may have been Syd Warren's favourite tenor player, certainly one of his top favourites.
ReplyDeleteHe's just about my favourite of the Blue Note roster too - and of course Grant Green on guitar.
They both had that 'je ne sais quoi' quality we talked about earlier.
